On 24th November, 1916, 2nd Royal West Surrey (Queens) of 91 Brigade, 7th Division moved into the front line trenches in front of the recently captured village of Beaumont-Hamel on the Somme. By now the Battle of the Somme had drawn to a close, one of the reasons for this being the very wet weather and the deep mud that lay everywhere. They were relieved on 29th November, that day that Walter Doe was killed, most likely from shell fire. |
